How To Measure Tongue Weight
At Bigfoot Trailers, we understand the importance of safety when hauling trailers. That’s why we built a reputation for handcrafting the most durable and reliable bumper pull trailers on the market. But even the toughest trailers need to be towed safely. This article will discuss how to measure tongue weight and why it’s crucial for a safe hauling experience.
What is Tongue Weight?
Tongue weight refers to the downward pressure exerted by the trailer’s tongue on the hitch ball of your tow vehicle. Maintaining the correct tongue weight is essential for safe towing.
Why is Tongue Weight Important?
Incorrect tongue weight can negatively impact your haul. Maintaining the proper tongue weight is not just a matter of safety, but also a critical factor in ensuring a stable towing experience. Here’s how improper tongue weight can affect hauling safety:
Insufficient Tongue Weight: If the tongue is too low, the trailer can sway excessively, making it difficult to control and increasing the risk of an accident.00
Excessive Tongue Weight: On the other hand, too much tongue weight can overload the rear tires and cause the rear end to sag. It can lead to tire damage, axle problems, and brake issues.
How to Measure Tongue Weight
There are two main methods for measuring tongue weight:
Recommended Method: Using a Tongue Weight Scale
Using a tongue weight scale is the simplest and most accurate way to measure tongue weight. It’s a straightforward process: place the scale under the trailer jack, lower the jack until the trailer rests on the scale, and read the measurement. You can easily buy a tongue weight scale online or contact the Bigfoot Trailer location near you.
Alternate Method: Using a Bathroom Scale (for trailers with a breakaway switch)
Although less accurate, you can use a standard bathroom scale and a 2×4 plank if you don’t have a tongue weight scale handy. However, this method is only suitable for trailers with a breakaway switch. Here’s how to do it:
- Chock the trailer wheels and ensure the trailer is level.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from your tow vehicle.
- Place the 2×4 plank on the trailer jack and position the bathroom scale on the end of the plank closest to the trailer.
- Carefully raise the trailer jack until the breakaway switch activates (indicated by a clicking sound or a visual signal). The tongue weight is now on the bathroom scale.
- Read the measurement. Keep in mind that this is an approximate tongue weight, and the actual weight may vary slightly. This method is a good alternative when a tongue weight scale is not available, but for precise measurements, we recommend using a tongue weight scale.
Safety Tips for Hauling
Consult your tow vehicle’s owner’s manual: The manual will specify the recommended tongue weight for your vehicle.
Use a weight distribution hitch: A weight distribution hitch helps distribute the trailer’s weight more evenly between the trailer’s and tow vehicle’s axles, improving stability and handling.
Double-check your connections: Before towing, ensure all hitch connections are secure, the wiring harness is connected, and safety chains are correctly attached.
Drive at safe speeds: Avoid exceeding the speed limit, especially when towing a trailer.
By following these tips and correctly measuring your tongue weight, you can ensure a safer and more productive hauling experience. Remember, safety should always be your top priority when towing a trailer.
