Alternate Method: Using a Bathroom Scale (for trailers with a breakaway switch)
Although less accurate, you can use a standard bathroom scale and a 2×4 plank if you don’t have a tongue weight scale handy. However, this method is only suitable for trailers with a breakaway switch. Here’s how to do it:
- Chock the trailer wheels and ensure the trailer is level.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from your tow vehicle.
- Place the 2×4 plank on the trailer jack and position the bathroom scale on the end of the plank closest to the trailer.
- Carefully raise the trailer jack until the breakaway switch activates (indicated by a clicking sound or a visual signal). The tongue weight is now on the bathroom scale.
